Portobello Road is a world-renowned market street that is full of heritage, reputation, and character. We are supporting the ambition of traders, businesses, and residents to sensitively address improving any issues to protect and enhance the experience of Portobello.
No aspect of work to Portobello Road has been envisioned, proposed, or actioned. We are currently working in partnership with the community to inform the scope of infrastructure improvements required and needed.
Where we are now
The Portobello Engagement Oversight Panel has met three times since July and they have helped to commission and meet engagement consultants Think Insight and Plus Four. They will help shape upcoming community conversations, based on robust local knowledge and appreciation of past consultations while capturing new views and opinions.
The consultant's mission is to help traders, businesses, residents, landowners, and community groups find balance between the need to improve the infrastructure of the area, while celebrating and protecting Portobello’s iconic character, culture, and heritage.
Next steps
A series of conversations involving a sample of independently recruited members of North Kensington, called ‘Portobello Conversations’ will take place from February 2024. Further details for these events will be announced once arrangements have been finalised over November - December.
How we got here
The first step in the long-term conversation about potential improvements was to recruit a panel of community members to help shape and deliver the wider community participatory process.
Over 20 members reflect traders, shop owners, residents, and organisations in the area from diverse backgrounds. The panel conversations will not focus on proposals, the panel is about making sure that the involvement of the community is transparent and robust throughout this project.
