Full Council Meeting Responses - 24 April 2019

Health and wellbeing of residents

Adriana Schwab spoke about the health and wellbeing of residents at the 24 April 2019 Full Council Meeting

Improving the Health and Wellbeing of our residents is one of the Council’s priorities set out in our Council plan.

Promoting physical activity across the borough can help achieve this goal and we believe it is our responsibility to make sure that residents exercise more and easily. Sports and physical activity can also help residents deal with loneliness as well as diseases related to ageing such as dementia or Parkinson’s.

To that end, the Council has developed the active for life programme, a partnership with organisations across the borough to provide activities for all abilities and backgrounds.

Moreover, we manage two leisure centres, one in the north of the borough - which we are currently improving- and one in the South of the borough. We are also looking to develop outdoor gyms and running groups.

In the South of the borough, there are a number of activities taking place at the New Horizons centre, St Johns Church, Sybil Thorndike Centre, Response Community Projects, Chelsea Sports Centre and Chelsea Theatre as well as Health walks taking place in the parks, including Battersea Park. For those suffering from Parkinson’s disease there is a Parkinson’s Dynamic Exercise group which meets in Notting Hill Gate on Wednesday evenings.

However, as you mentioned, most of the free or low -cost activities are organised during the day, as they target specific populations such as the elderly. We will consider developing more activities in the evenings and on weekends if there is a demand, so thank you for bringing this to our attention.
