Grenfell - scrutiny

Question: In light of the recent outcome of the Taskforce report, where James Brokenshire MP summed up the Recovery Strategy’s strategic failure to present a coherent narrative on recovery, it is asked that the Council take serious consideration of the request by residents to defer the decisions made at the Administration Committee by six weeks, to allow them to fully read the papers and gain legal advice regarding the decision to cease the Grenfell Scrutiny Committee. It may be that the recommendations are agreed, but time is needed to look into it properly.

Response by Cllr Elizabeth Campbell: Over the past two years, governance, the policy stance and overarching culture at the council has been reviewed, driven by the need to learn lessons from the Grenfell Tragedy. Following months of consultation and discussion, scrutiny of the council is being strengthened and issues associated with Grenfell will be considered in five committees instead of one. As Grenfell is the number one priority in ‘Our Council Plan’ the expectation is for all Scrutiny Chairs to be addressing matters related to Grenfell.

In recent months questions have been received relating to Grenfell which extend beyond the council’s remit, it is hoped that the new forum ‘the Grenfell Community Assembly’ will give the community the opportunity to ask questions and get answers they need directly from all the agencies involved in the Grenfell Recovery.
