Summer Reading Challenge 2022

Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge 2022

Children aged four to 11 years old are invited to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The exciting theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge is Gadgeteers. Just read six books over the summer holidays to complete the challenge and receive a medal, certificate as well as other exciting rewards. Whether you're a brilliant baker, soon-to-be scientist, mega music fan or the tech wizard among your friends, join the Gadgeteers to discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around you, including some of your favourite things.

Curious? Perfect! Your imagination can unlock endless possibilities. Gadgeteers will feature amazing books, with stickers and other rewards for children as they progress through the reading challenge. Every child that reads six books will get a medal and certificate for completing this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

Join the challenge for free at your local Kensington and Chelsea library. And keep an eye on our website and social media for all the latest Summer Reading Challenge events and activities happening in your local library throughout the summer holiday.

Baby rhyme time at Kensington Central Library  - Mondays

Come along to our baby rhyme time.  Join in as we sing your favourites such as the Welcome Song, Wheels on the Bus, If You're Happy and You Know It and more.

Come along to baby rhyme time at the library. This event is especially for the under 5s and their parents/carers.

Bridging the Gap peer to peer tutoring - Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • First sessions Tuesday 1 and Thursday 3 March
  • 6pm to 7pm
  • North Kensington Library

COVID has made it very challenging for secondary school students to keep up with the curriculum. Bridging the Gap is a peer to peer tutoring initiative which aims to help students who want to catch up to be able to do so and get ahead.

Classes in Maths, English, French and computer science will be put in place and tailored to the participants’ needs. This could be revising material, help with homework and exploring new topics in each subject area. 

These classes are for pupils in Year 10. To book a place, email: [email protected].

Story time at Kensington Central Library - Wednesdays

Join us every Thursday for rhymes and fun, this event is especially for the under 5s and their parents/carers.

Story and rhyme time at Chelsea Library – Thursdays

Join us every Thursday for a fun story and rhyme time session. These sessions are especially for the under 5s and their parents/ carers.

Only limited places available. You must book a ticket at the library enquiry desk on the ground floor. One ticket = a place for one adult and two children. Please bring your ticket with you on the day.

Join us every Friday for a fun story session. These sessions are especially for the under 5s and their parents/ carers.

Storyland at Brompton Library – every Saturday

Join us at the library every Saturday for stories, arts and crafts. There sessions are suitable for children aged 5 and over, although younger children are always welcome.

Story and craft at North Kensington Library – fourth Saturday of the month

Come along to the library once a month to hear a story and create a fun craft based on the book.

This event is suitable for children of all ages. There’s no need to book a place, just turn up.

Special Events

Stories of Us: collage workshops at North Kensington Library - Monday 4, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6, Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July 

Come and join us at the library to explore cutting and sticking at these family workshops with artist, Jodie House. Jodie is a collage artist who works in the community using collage and photography as an engagement tool and as a way to support people's well-being. She says:

‘My collage work includes found materials, but mostly street billboards that have seen better days. I love ripping paste-ups that have been spray painted or weathered by the wind and rain. I have always been a resourceful person and will reuse materials that have been discarded’.

Collage play workshop at North Kensington Library - Monday 4 July

Join us with artist, Jodie House for a day of collage play. Collage is a fun way to explore ripping and cutting images to make pictures. Anyone can make a collage and no experience is necessary.

This event is for families and is suitable for children of all ages.

Stories on Screen: pop-up cinema for children at North Kensington Library - Saturday 9, 16, 23 and 30 July

Join us for a month of film screenings for children at North Kensington Library

As part of our Stories of Us season, come along to our pop- up cinema and watch children’s classic films, filmed and set in the local North Kensington area. To find out what films we are showing, please ask library staff. 

Children under the age of eight must have an adult with them and adults need to be accompanied by a child.

Why do we love the ‘Twilight’ saga? reading event for young adults at Brompton Library - Tuesday 12 July
  • 6.30pm to 7.30pm

Join us at the library for a special reading event for young adults. We will read and discuss some of Stephenie Meyer’s books – ‘Twilight’, ‘New Moon’ and ‘Midnight Sun’ – and watch extracts from the first two Twilight films.

These are stories about impossible, heart-breaking love between a seventeen-year-old girl, Bella and Edward, a vampire frozen in the body of a seventeen-year-old, that is doomed - condemned to end tragically, yet, it finds ways to survive.

We’ve some very special Baby Rhyme Times – in the open air! Join James from North Kensington Library – he’ll be performing your favourite rhymes with a story or two Under the Portobello Green Canopy.

This event is suitable for children aged five and under. Don’t forget to bring a blanket to sit on and have some fun!

Stories of Us: Fundowheel bilingual storytelling session at Portobello Green Canopy - Monday 18 July
  • 4pm to 5pm
  • Under the Portobello Green Canopy, Portobello Road, W10 5TY

Join us and Fundowheel under the canopy at Portobello Market for an interactive, bilingual story telling session, in Spanish and English.  This session will illustrate the power of the imagination with two fun stories, Mr Muscle Doesn’t Trust Himself and The Prince and the Frog.

Fundowheel won the National Award from the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2015. Theiridea is to promote a bilingual experience in English and Spanish through drama activities.

Families are welcome to meet us at North Kensington Library and take a walk with us to the canopy at 3.40pm.
