Portobello and Golborne market has gone online this year, featuring listings of businesses and traders on the dscvr app and hosting virtual gift fairs while under national restrictions.
Under the national restrictions, retailers selling non-essential items, including market traders, and hospitality businesses have been forced to close – though they can still offer delivery, click and collect, and takeaway services. Traders selling essential items such as food and household goods are allowed to stay open.
You can now find a huge range of the stalls, shops, and food outlets in Portobello and Golborne on the dscvr app. The app lists different businesses in the area and where to find them, plus you can access their websites so you can shop online too. Just download ‘dscvr’ to your device and search the location ‘Portobello Road’.
Lead Member for Economy, Employment and Innovation, Cllr Catherine Faulks said:
“It’s a difficult time for market traders and local businesses with national Covid-19 restrictions – which is why we’re bringing Christmas online this year, to give people another way to shop and support local business owners until we’re able to visit again in person.
“We need to be innovative and come up with new ways to help the recovery of our market and local economy. Christmas is a vital time for many businesses and we encourage everyone who can to shop locally to help protect livelihoods.”
Following on from the success of a virtual antiques fair hosted on the @VisitPortobello Instagram page in October, three more virtual fairs will be taking place:
- Saturday 21 November 11am to 3pm: Stocking fillers and gifts for kids
- Saturday 28 November 11am to 3pm: Gifts for him, her and them
- Sunday 29 November 4pm to 7pm: Digital antiques fair
See the range of fantastic gifts from stallholders and you can click through to their pages to shop directly. All you need to do is watch the @VisitPortobello Instagram stories which will be live during the fair and you can access them after, where they will be saved in a ‘Highlights’ reel on the page.
