Following an introduction through the Council-funded RBKC construction Supply Chain programme, property developer, Ballymore, has appointed local architect, Studio Bednarski to design a cycle pedestrian bridge over train tracks at Kensal Canalside.

Studio Bednarski, based in Barlby Road in the borough, won the tender to undertake RIBA stage 1, project brief and feasibility studies development, and Stage 2 concept design for the bridge.

Cezary Bednarski of Studio Bednarski, is an awarding-winning and internationally renowned Architect , who has won over 30 international competitions - 13 of which were for bridge designs. He is set to work alongside structural engineers, Buro Happold, MK Survey’s and Network Rail, to bring forward the design concept.

The site, which is based north of the borough, is recognised as one of London’s 38 Opportunity Areas, with the potential to transform its 38 acres into a well-connected, attractive and sustainable canalside neighbourhood for people to live, work and visit.

The Council’s Supply Chain Project has played a pivotal role in facilitating contract opportunities between local businesses and large construction companies in the last couple of years.

Last year, the Supply Chain Programme facilitated a new work order for Local skip-hire company, Skipit, with Willmott Dixon (WD) – one of the UK's leading independent construction and property services companies. On his experience working with the Supply Chain, Mo Maan, Director of Central Waste Services Ltd at Skipit, said: "RBKC Supply Chain have been fantastic throughout this process and have helped us win an order from a top company".

Cllr Catherine Faulks, Lead Member for Economy, Employment and Innovation at Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:
“We recognise that Kensal Canalside is a space that holds much promise and opportunity for the local area. Development on this is space must be undertaken with local place and people in consideration, and what better way than our very own local resident and award-winning Architect, Cezary Bednarski at the helm of what promises to be a very exciting project.”

Cezary M Bednarski, Principal Architect at Studio Bednarski Ltd, said:

“I have been living and working in the RBKC since 1981, and north of the borough since 1984. I was overjoyed when Ballymore asked me to join their team for the project in North Kensington, to design a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Paddington train tracks - some 100 metres from my studio in Barlby Road. Working with Buro Happold we will design a bridge that my co-residents will be proud of, that is safe, and marks our area as a gateway for Paddington bound trains.”

Michael Hughes, Project Director at Ballymore, said:
“We are delighted to appoint Studio Bednarski to design the new pedestrian bridge over the Paddington Rail line. This is a significant piece of infrastructure that will transform accessibility within the local area.”

RBKC Supply Chain is a business support project which aims to make sure local small and medium sized businesses in the construction related and property maintenance sectors benefit as much as possible from the investment going into the borough from property developments as well as procurement by the Council and its contractors. Support provided through the project includes:

  •  Help for local SMEs with tendering, accreditation, marketing and access to opportunities from buyers who are committed to procuring more locally: workshops, meet the buyer, one-to-ones and contract opportunities.
  • Help for Main Contractors and Council 1st Tier Contractors working on local sites to find good local subcontractors and suppliers and meet their local procurement targets.
