Students at colleges and sixth forms in Kensington and Chelsea have welcomed their A Level results today, following a year of studies unlike any other.
Across Kensington and Chelsea, provisional results show 86 per cent of students achieved A Level results at grade A* to C, up from 81 per cent in 2019. As students were unable to sit their exams as planned due to the Coronavirus lockdown, grades were calculated based on predicted grades as assessed by schoolteachers who worked closely with students throughout their studies.
While some students will be looking to have their grades reassessed, many are celebrating today as they receive offers to their universities and apprenticeship placements of choice.
Cllr Josh Rendall, Kensington and Chelsea Council’s Lead Member for Children and Family Services, said:
“The last few months have been challenging for pupils, parents and teachers who have being working tirelessly during the lockdown. Although the circumstances have been unusual, everyone receiving their results today should feel extra proud. We’ve had some excellent results across the borough and there is so much to celebrate.
“This is just the beginning of the next chapter and if the results were not what you had hoped for, there are many avenues of support on hand to help guide you.”
Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School
At Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, 47 per cent of students achieved grades of A* and A, up from last year’s 44 per cent. Fourteen students have accepted places into Oxbridge.
Chelsea Academy
At Chelsea Academy, over a quarter of all grades awarded were either an A* or A grade and over 58 per cent were above a grade B. Five students have been accepted into Oxbridge and even more to respected universities around the country.
Matt Williams, Principal of Chelsea Academy, said: “These are a great set of results and destinations for a group of young people that worked so hard and then had the summer exams cancelled when they were ready to shine. We are celebrating the significant number of students that got into Oxbridge but also all of those that have done well and are now moving onto the next stage of their education journey or into the world of work.”
Holland Park School
At Holland Park School, six students achieved three or more A* grades and have accepted offers at their first-choice universities.
Kensington Aldridge Academy
In the north of the borough, students at Kensington Aldridge Academy (KAA) welcomed outstanding results, with 81 per cent of entries awarded A* to C grades. As in previous years, the results are well above national average and are testament to the hard work and talent of KAA’s students and staff. Vicky, who studied at KAA for the past two years, achieved 3 A*s and will be studying Chemistry at Jesus College, Oxford in September. On collecting her results this morning, Vicky said she was very happy, commenting: “it was very nerve racking as I didn’t know how it would work out. With exams, you can guess how you might have done, but with this I just didn’t know.”
The Council has been supporting students today who either didn’t achieve the grades they were hoping for, or who may have done better than expected and are looking at what options are available to them through clearing.
