Free support for local employers to become disability inclusive

Published: Tuesday 26 October 2021

Local businesses and organisations in Kensington and Chelsea offered free support to create better access to employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

The Council hosted an event on Tuesday 12 October which saw over 25 employers in the borough attend to hear more about becoming disability inclusive. The event featured guest speakers from partners including the Business Disability Forum, West London College, and local business, Planet Organic.

Key topics were covered such as common barriers for disabled candidates, the Council’s supported internships programme, inclusive apprenticeships, pathways to recruitment and the benefits to business.

Cllr Catherine Faulks, Lead Member for Economy Employment and Innovation, who spoke at the event, said:

“Being truly inclusive means offering equal opportunities to all members of our community and as a borough, we’re committed to supporting our residents and local employers to achieve that.

“The Supported Internships are a valuable way for people with disabilities to gain vital work experience and employers can really benefit from opening up their recruitment pool.”

The introductory session gave employers an overview of what it means to be disability inclusive, as well as informing them of the range of support available to take the first step or progress with expanding their recruitment pool.

On offer through the Council is its Supported Internship programme which trains local people with disabilities for roles, ensuring that they are carefully matched and supported to work to their full potential. Employers also receive guidance on how to find the best candidate for a role through the programme and the Council is currently working with Design Museum and Nando’s who host supported internship placements.

Following on from the event is a free Disability Employer training led by the Business Disability Forum on Tuesday 9 November for those who want to expand their understanding of being disability inclusive and discover practical next steps.

All businesses and organisations are encouraged to take part or get in touch with the Council for further information, just email [email protected].
