The Council injects a new round of funding into the cultural sector

Published: Wednesday 14 July 2021

The culture services team recently awarded £30,000 in funding to 11 local projects as part of the Spring 2021 round of the Arts Grants scheme. Assessed by our newly formed Resident Assessment Panel, the grants will go toward supporting the production and creation of new cultural activities in the borough. The total value of these projects is £150,888, which includes additional funding secured and in-kind support.

The culture service has also opened the Black History Month small grants scheme up to applications after the success of last year’s funding initiative. Through the grant last year, organisations were able to put together documentaries, workshops and more to celebrate the diverse history and contributions of Black British, African, and Caribbean residents.

This year, the scheme will continue to celebrate the achievements of the community with successful applicants receiving up to £500 to host an activity to celebrate Black History Month in October.

Culture will also continue to be on full display in the borough as the Spring 2021 Arts Grants scheme will see the realization of dance projects, uplifting choirs, therapeutic art sessions and more to get the local community involved in the arts.

This scheme will continue to support one of our hard-hit sectors, providing the opportunity for creators to inspire and uplift the community with art.

Alejandro Librero, Development Manager from The Gate Theatre said

“Funding opportunities of this nature are so important for the arts. This grant will allow my team to deliver workshops and programmes to provide access and increase diversity in the arts for young people.”

“Our sessions have been invaluable to our community, offering a place of comradery for fellow young artists. This funding will give the artists a place of belonging and chance to develop their craft.”

Janine Ulfane, Creative Producer and founder of A Million Freds Production said

“We are so thrilled to have the Council’s support in receiving this grant. It means we can continue to connect with the community and use art to tell the stories of older women and younger people. This money will allow us to use the theatre to help everyone who wants to, find their voice.”
