Access cost of living support and help shape the Grenfell Community Assembly

Published: Wednesday 1 February 2023

The next Grenfell Community Assembly will help North Kensington residents to combat the cost of living by featuring a community warm hub at the Harrow Club.

Working in partnership with Kensington and Chelsea Social Council (KCSC), the event will take place on Monday 6 February and offer support with the rising cost of living, as well as the opportunity to feedback on how the Assemblies develop moving forward.

Councillor Sof McVeigh, Lead Member for Communities, will be attending the event. She said: “This event will give residents the chance to access local cost of living support and services, which is incredibly important given the current climate. We know it’s a very difficult time for many people across the borough, so we want to do everything we can to support residents.

“As a Council we are committed to helping residents with the cost of living crisis, along with ongoing Covid recovery and £2 million of existing discretionary funding to voluntary organisations to assist the most vulnerable residents. We want residents to know how they can access this support.”

Free hot food will be available, along with information stalls that include advice on saving energy, welfare rights, financial health checks and information about handling money and debts.

Catherine Watling, Community Resilience Support Programme Co-ordinator for KCSC, said: "We are pleased to have this latest opportunity to bring together a variety of Council, NHS and voluntary sector organisations to help tackle the cost of living crisis in the borough. Our programme of events will continue to roll out throughout spring and summer, reaching all corners of the borough.

“The cost of living crisis, while covered widely in the press, is a very private concern. This event is an attempt by KCSC, the voluntary sector and our RBKC colleagues to address this national issue.”

The Council is asking residents to share their thoughts and ideas about the future of the Assembly so it can ensure the events meet community needs. Following the event, a written record of the discussions will be provided along with a document detailing how the Council plans to use the feedback to shape the Assemblies moving forward.

Councillor Sof continued: “After receiving feedback from residents at previous Assemblies about the event’s name and purpose, we want to continue this discussion and work with local residents to find a way to improve the Grenfell Community Assembly so it meets its purpose. We need as many North Kensington residents as possible to come along and share their thoughts and ideas.”

Unlike previous Assemblies there will be no formal discussion so please drop in at any time between 5pm and 7.30pm.
