Bousfield Primary School is looking for a SEND Learning Support Assistant to join our friendly and supportive school. COANS is a unique historic nursery school, which provides a caring, inclusive learning environment for 70 children.

We are looking for an experienced and keen Teaching Assistant to work one to one with children with special educational needs as well as support the classroom learning environment.

Level 2 Childcare Qualification or above with experience of supporting a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or experience with special educational needs in the 2-5 age group is desirable but not essential.

You will work as joint educator with the child’s keyworker guiding the child’s access to the broad and balanced curriculum both indoors and out.  You will need energy, enthusiasm, professional skills and dedication.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a background in education, social care or similar to join KAA and make a huge difference.

We are looking for an experienced safeguarding practitioner to join our pastoral team, working to support our students and families. Working closely with our Designated Safeguarding Lead and Senior Safeguarding Officer, you will oversee the day to day running of safeguarding within the academy.

You will be key to ensuring that all safeguarding matters are dealt with in a swift, efficient and appropriate manner, liaising regularly with our Directors of Learning and wider pastoral team.

The Safeguarding Officer must be a highly organised, dynamic and approachable individual who will approach complex safeguarding issues in a calm, methodical manner. You will act as an advocate for our KAA community and will model compassion and empathy through practice. 

You will model outstanding practice to our staff body and will proactively work to ensure that safeguarding practices at the academy go from strength to strength.

You will support the school’s safeguarding and multi-agency work, developing and maintaining relationships with external agencies and partners as a main point of contact.

Key Responsibilities

Systems and procedures
  • Ensure the smooth running of the safeguarding systems, including CPOMS and the Central Safeguarding Register 
  • Liaise with internal and external colleagues and partners, providing reports and information regarding attendance, behaviour and safeguarding concerns
  • Proactively use data to identify patterns and trends to create relevant interventions
  • Complete Safeguarding Hub administration in preparation for Safeguarding Hub meetings
Student/Family Support 
  • Oversee and respond to daily safeguarding concerns and challenges including mental health and welfare concerns
  • Act as a trusted adult and role model in the lives of students and their families
  • Coordinate support for students and their families, utilising the wide range of offerings from the school, social sector and local area, being an advocate for them, when required
  • Complete home visits for specific students and have regular meetings with their families to increase engagement with school and education
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to students and/or families to help them support each young person to make good progress in school
  • Innovate and deliver effective mentoring to raise motivation, aspirations and develop positive behaviours
  • Ensure that all mentoring programmes offered by the safeguarding team provide a range of strategies that will motivate, challenge and empower further learning and ensure students make positive changes
  • Act as a focal point for pupils needing additional care, guidance and support and those going through complex key transition stages in their lives e.g. family break up, loss, bereavement, friendships and illness
  • Assist staff in identifying pupils showing early signs of disengagement and those who would benefit from mentoring help to overcome barriers to learning
Working in Partnership
  • To assist the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), Senior Safeguarding Officer and the Directors of Learning (DoLs) by supporting them in their duties
  • Attend external meetings on behalf of DSL/ DoLs/Senior Safeguarding Officer when required, including CP conferences, core groups, CiN meetings and TAFs
  • Liaise closely with the staff in school to ensure they understand and support the role of your team
  • Communicate your knowledge and understanding of pupils to other school staff and education, health and social care professionals, so that informed decision making can take place on intervention and provision
  • Ensure that the quality of output and communication with external agencies and the local authority is monitored and improved where required, maintaining KAA’s strong reputation in this field
Academy culture
  • Be a visible and active presence in and around the KAA community to ensure all students are exhibiting the conduct we expect of them
  • Maintain high levels of confidentiality and uphold the highest standards relating to duty of care for our young people
  • Undertake training and development relevant to the post and in line with the Academy’s priorities
  • Maintain a presence around the school to ensure that the highest standards of behaviour and site-usage are upheld
  • Where required, to cover for absent colleagues and ensure the school runs smoothly
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by Line Manager/SLT
  • Ensure that all current legislation relating to the safeguarding of young people is evidently understood and transpires in practice
Skills and Experience
  • Recent and successful experience of having responsibility for the safeguarding of young people
  • Have knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures, legislation and protocols including ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021’
  • Experience of working and collaborating with outside agencies and contributing to a multi-agency approach towards specific students
  • Evidence of demonstrating flexibility, creativity and resilience when overcoming complex barriers with young people
  • Experience of enacting and advocating solution-focussed or restorative approaches to behaviour with young people
  • Understand the complexities and adversity that students at KAA may face

Teaching Assistant for Children with Autism - Kensington Queensmill and Queensmill School

The Queensmill Trust is a newly-established multi-academy trust with a focus on provision for autistic children. The trust provides highly personalised education for children and young people diagnosed with autism in purpose-built facilities at Queensmill School, Shepherds Bush and more recently, at Kensington Queensmill, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. For September 2022, the trust is seeking to recruit enthusiastic, hardworking and committed people to join our team in both schools.

Job purpose

To promote the learning and welfare of pupils in schools.

Description of duties

  • To assist the class teacher (and other professionals as appropriate) in the organisation of activities, resources and materials suitably differentiated for children with autism
  • To help our pupils to stay on task and remain calm, under the direction of the class teacher and working with any other member of the class team
  • To work positively with all members of the class team
  • To establish good relationships with pupils and their families, acting as a role model and being aware of, and responding to, individual needs
  • To support pupils to understand instructions and to engage in any given task
  • To assist in maintaining the health and safety of pupils by maintaining a tidy and organised work area and reporting any identified hazards to the class teacher.
  • To respond to the welfare needs of pupils by supporting them and reporting any concerns about the general well-being of pupils to the class teacher, and to help with changing and toileting as directed by the class teacher
  • To administer first aid and medication for pupils, under direction, where appropriate training has been provided.
  • To go on off-site visits with the class, including swimming.
  • To assist with playground duties, under the supervision of teaching staff.
  • To be aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and to keep confidences appropriately.
  • To attend relevant in-service training. To learn about autism and understand the needs of pupils with autism.
  • To be aware of school policies and procedures and comply with these.
