Home contents insurance

Home contents insurance for Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea tenants

As you are a tenant of the Council, we will insure the building you live in but we do not insure the contents of your home. We recommend that you take out home contents’ insurance.

We work with Royal Sun Alliance Insurance plc (RSA) to arrange a contents insurance scheme designed for our tenants. The household contents insurance scheme covers the cost of replacing your belongings in the event of theft, loss or damage.

What is covered by this insurance?

  • The insurance financially protects the contents in your home, garage and shed.
  • Cover includes improvements you make to your home, such as new laminate flooring or a fitted kitchen.
  • You don’t have to have special door or window locks – as long as your external doors lock, it’s fine.
  • You can upgrade your cover to protect your homes contents against accidental damage.
  • No nasty surprises – no excess on claims and no fees for changing your details or cancelling your policy.

There is also an option to extend the standard cover to include:

  • full accidental damage for your household’s contents
  • your personal belongings away from the home
  • pedal cycles
  • wheelchairs
  • hearing aids

How much does it cost?

Levels of cover start from as low as £4,000 and there is no excess to pay, should you need to claim.

Prices start from 45p per week, £1.47 per month, or £15.65 a year for contents insurance.

The prices shown are for £4,000 of contents insurance cover, based on postcode area and include a transaction fee. These prices exclude accidental damage and optional covers. The price you pay will depend on your individual circumstances, postcode and cover chosen.

The scheme is flexible so you can pay weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or annually.

Other home contents insurance schemes

Some of our tenants have contents insurance with Thistle My Home, a special tenants’ scheme set up by the National Housing Federation. The Council’s relationship with the Royal Sun Alliance Group does not affect this and your insurance is still valid. You can continue to renew your contents insurance with Thistle My Home or seek alternative quotations.

If you prefer not to take advantage of the RSA home contents cover - you could make your own home contents insurance arrangements. We recommend that you always have home contents insurance.
