Flooding

Flooding advice – additional help and support from the Council

Housing support

Emergencies can happen at any time and it is possible that you will need assistance from the Council outside of normal office hours. You can call the Council at any time on 020 7361 3008 for advice and help.

In extreme circumstances the Council may set up a local rest centre for people evacuated from their homes – these are usually set up in community centres or other Council buildings.

If your home has been flooded you may be able to get temporary accommodation from the council, or from a housing association, or paid for by your home insurance company.

If you require temporary emergency housing from the Council because of flooding, contact the Housing Solutions Team by calling 0207 361 3008 or emailing [email protected]

Council tenants

Following a flood, the Council will contact all Council housing tenants and those residents in temporary accommodation to offer them support. If you are a Council tenant or leaseholder, call 0800 137 111 email [email protected] or [email protected].

Council Tax

If you need to move out of your property temporarily while repairs are carried out, you may be eligible for a reduction in Council Tax. Residents should contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to see if the damage to the property is of a level to remove it from the valuation list. In some circumstances, home insurance policies cover paying Council Tax liability for any period they are not able to reside at the dwelling. Please contact the Council if you have any outstanding concerns.

Business support

Support for businesses affected by flooding

Following severe weather conditions support is available for local businesses whose premises are affected.

Businesses in Council owned buildings

Businesses who are tenants or leaseholders of Council-owned commercial property will be supported by Council officers following flooding. Officers will assist with the clean-up of the premises, provide information on how to contact the Council’s insurers to make a claim, as well as providing support on contacting insurers directly to process claims.

If you are a Council commercial tenant in need of support as a result of flooding please contact [email protected].

Leaseholders, property owners and private business tenants

Commercial property owners, private tenants or leaseholders in premises not owned by the Council should contact the property manager or landlord and contact insurance providers as soon as possible if their business has been affected. The Council is on hand to provide advice to businesses on a range of issues, including on how to secure assistance from insurers or contacting their waste management provider.

Any business in the borough may be eligible to apply for business rates relief if their operations have been significantly affected or halted. You can find out more about the Council’s Hardship Relief scheme online but businesses are advised this is a longer-term support measure and will not be allocated immediately, with applications being assessed on a case-by-case basis. Claiming against your insurance is the quickest and most immediate means of receiving financial support.

If you are a local business not in Council-owned premises and need advice on general matters, please email [email protected]
