Role of the Deputy Mayor

Every year, upon their election at the Annual Meeting of the Council, the Mayor may appoint a Deputy Mayor. The Deputy Mayor may, if for any reason the Mayor is unable to act, discharge all the functions which the Mayor might discharge.

The Deputy Mayor supports the Mayor as First Citizen of the Borough. On occasions where the Mayor cannot attend an event to which she is invited, the Deputy Mayor may be asked to attend in her place.

While the Deputy Mayor may take seats on committees and continue to carry out their ward councillor duties, when they are attending an event as Deputy Mayor they do so in an entirely non-political capacity.
