Principles of good governance

Our Constitution sets out how the council operates, how decisions are made and the procedures that are followed to ensure that these are efficient, transparent and accountable to you. We are reviewing the Constitution to make sure it accurately reflects the 12 principles of good governance and condensing it to make it more readable.  

The 12 principles were developed by the Centre for Public Scrutiny from the conversations it had with residents, councillors, officers and partners. The 12 principles of good governance are:

• Connecting with residents
• Focusing on what matters
• Listening to every voice
• Acting with integrity
• Involving before deciding
• Communicating what we’re doing
• Inviting residents to take part
• Being clearly accountable
• Responding fairly to everyone’s needs
• Working as a team
• Managing responsibly
• Having the support we need

We also want to make sure that the 12 principles are lived out in practice. To do this we will be training and developing your councillors so they can better address your needs.

An example of putting these 12 principles of good governance into practice has been the work of Creating Stronger Communities in North Kensington.
