The Deputy Mayor's Biography

Councillor Janet Evans was elected to the Council in May 2018 and re-elected in 2022, representing Courtfield ward.

Janet has been appointed to Chair the Licensing Committee in May 2022.

Janet was Chair of Family Services Select Committee (FSSC) from 2019 until 2022 and made sure that during the pandemic, children had proper meals, learning tools and computers. Janet guided FSSC to scrutinise Serious Youth Violence and Domestic Abuse, viewing the child as victim, and turning exclusions into inclusions.

Janet’s career path has always been guided by encouraging people to be innovative, pro-active and positive.

Janet graduated summa cum lauda in Early Childhood Education from New York University and obtained a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School. Kensington and Chelsea has been her home since 1989.

She has also served on the Licensing Committee, Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Housing Select Committee, Schools Forum, Planning Applications Committee, and is a Governor at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Janet’s goal in life is to be kind to others and to make sure that we are all having fun.

The Role of the Deputy Mayor

Every year, upon their election, the Mayor appoints a Deputy Mayor.

If the Mayor is unable to attend an event, the Deputy Mayor will attend where possible. Over their term, the Deputy Mayor may also get involved in a few projects or events focussed on causes they are particularly passionate about.

While the Deputy Mayor may take seats on committees and continue to carry out their ward councillor duties, when they are attending an event in their capacity as Deputy Mayor they do not take an active political role in the Council’s affairs.
