Grenfell - health needs

Response to question about Grenfell health needs, raised at Full Council Meeting on 17 October 2018

Grenfell - health needs

Question by Claire Simmons

Claire Simmons spoke at the Council meeting on 17 October 2018 about health impacts for residents outside the Lancaster West estate.

The Council’s public health team works with the NHS to understand and meet health needs in the Borough. Read the recently published needs assessment specifically considering the impact of the fire on those affected. We and the NHS are using this assessment to plan and deliver services to those affected by the fire.

We know that people are worried about possible air pollution and soil contamination. We aim to protect people’s health and safeguard them from harm. There needs to be thorough investigation of suggestions made in recent media reports that there may be toxic contaminants in soil near Grenfell Tower and across a wider area. We will take advice from both Public Health England and the Environment Agency to agree the nature and scope of any testing on this site, and elsewhere, and work on this is already underway. Crucially, we will also ensure community input into any testing.
