Public health training information for candidates

Start and finish times

Please arrive at least ten minutes before the start time of your course. You may be turned away if you are late.

• Full day courses: 9am to approximately 5pm
• Half day courses: 9am to approximately 12.30pm

The dress code is normally casual unless your employer or manager states otherwise.

Photo ID

If you're attending a Level 1 to 4 course that ends with an exam you need to bring some form of photographic ID such as your:

• passport
• national identity card
• driving license
• work identification
• college or school identification
• travel card

Course programme

Your trainer will follow a syllabus and tailor the programme to your group's needs. Half or whole day workshops are generally relaxed and involve activities such as:

• presentations
• group work
• quizzes
• films
• handouts

For Level 3 or 4 qualifications, or a train the trainer course, you will need to do some preparation work in your own time.

For Level 4 courses, depending on the examination body, you may have to submit an assignment at least one month before sitting an exam.

Exams and assessments

To sit an exam you need to attend:

• Level 1 and 2: 100 per cent of the course
• Level 3 and 4: a minimum of 80 per cent of the course

Exams usually take place:

• Level 1 and 2: at the end of the course
• Level 3 and 4: on a date given on your training agreement or joining instructions

We can provide special exam support if:

• English is not your first language
• you have special educational needs or learning difficulties
• you are ill or impaired

We need at least four weeks’ notice if you or your candidate needs additional support.

Candidate's Charter

If your course qualification is awarded by The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) read about the Candidate Charter.

Certificates

If you pass an exam a certificate will be sent to you or your employer about six to ten weeks after the training course.

Certificates will not be posted out to you unless payment has been made. There is a charge for replacement certificates.

Put your learning into practice

Your training course and certificate are only part of the training cycle. After your course you should start to put your learning into practice at your workplace. If you are a manager you will need to supervise and instruct your staff that have received the training.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health recommends refresher training every 36 months.

Become a trainer

To deliver Level 1 or 2 courses you will need a:

• Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in the subject that you wish to tutor
• Level 3 Award in Training Skills and Practice (or minimum equivalent)
