About Thurloe Place

Thurloe Place is near South Kensington tube. This small, peaceful garden contains the Yalta Memorial.

It remembers those people who were forcibly repatriated by Allies to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union after the Second World War.

Many did not survive the journey home and those that did faced starvation and disease.

History of Thurloe Place

This square, begun in 1840 by G. Basevi, announced a new era in Italianate town house design. It is named after John Thurloe. It is said that Oliver Cromwell presented the land in Brompton for services rendered during the Commonwealth.
