As the home of the Notting Hill Carnival, Kensington and Chelsea has long experienced close ties with the Caribbean community. To celebrate Windrush Day and the contribution African Caribbeans have made to the borough, we have partnered with iBlackbird and The Playground Theatre for a ceremonial flag raising and community event, which is believed to be the only flag raising by a borough on Windrush Day.
Hosted by members of the community, and the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Preety Hudd, the event will feature raising the Windrush flag, and also music, information, speeches and talks from residents in Kensington and Chelsea as they share their and their families ties to Windrush.
The event will also feature a Remembrance Roll Call, where members of the community and residents can shout out their relatives and friends from all communities, and share their stories.
Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Preety Hudd, said:
“It is an honour to be part of the celebrating the contributions of our many African Caribbean communities who have lived, worked and raised families in our borough and helped to make it the vibrant, multi-cultural environment we know and love.”
Lead Member for Communities, Councillor Sof McVeigh, said:
“It has been a real pleasure working with the community to organise and put on this event. Celebrating the stories and history of our residents and communities is so important.”
To support the event, Kensington and Chelsea Council have donated use of the square, significant officer time, and used their channels and communications platforms to help champion the voices of residents.
Join us at Jubilee Square on Thursday 22 June, from 11am, as we celebrate the rich history and community of the borough.
