New five-year Markets Plan for the borough

Published: Monday 14 March 2022

Portobello and other markets across Kensington and Chelsea will see some brand new initiatives introduced as part of the Council’s Markets Plan 2022-2027, including offering pitches for new businesses and charities, youth programmes, seasonal events, and eco-friendly schemes.

The Plan outlines 46 action points to be implemented over the next five years to improve markets and street trading across the borough for visitors and traders, as well as the local community.

Cllr Catherine Faulks, Lead Member of Economy, Employment and Innovation said:
“Our markets are a vital part of our borough’s history and culture, as well as our local economy, so it’s a priority for the Council to make sure they recover from the pandemic and are equipped to succeed in the future.
“The Markets Plan outlines how our markets can adapt to become places for the whole community, as well as continuing to be a top visitor destination, by introducing innovative new ideas and initiatives.”

Some of the new initiatives will be coming this year such as:

  • Sites being made available for local people to test out new businesses;
  • Pitches to give a platform to local charities;
  • A youth programme for market stall experience and training;
  • Seasonal Sundays during the summer and Christmas period at Portobello;
  • Promotion of eco-friendly stalls such as those with plastic-free produce.

The Plan has been published following extensive consultation with traders, residents, visitors, local businesses and partners to pinpoint the best way to help markets recover from the pandemic but also to thrive and adapt for the future.

Measures to improve high streets and markets are being introduced by the Council as part of its priorities to support the local economy post-Covid. Other measures include the permanent pedestrianisation of Portobello Road during market hours, extending al fresco dining licensing, and supporting new Business Improvement Districts in Kensington High St, King’s Rd and Brompton Rd.
