Key workers set to move into first new homes at Hewer Street

Published: Thursday 21 September 2023

We’re celebrating a landmark in our New Homes Delivery Programme as our first site at Hewer Street is now complete.

Cllr Sof McVeigh, new Lead Member for Housing, visited the new homes earlier this week to mark the milestone.

15-17 Hewer Street provides 20 new homes - 10 of which will be rented by key workers such as those working in the NHS, fire service, social care and schools, with the remainder being offered at market rent. Two of the homes are accessible.

All of the key worker homes have now been viewed and allocated, and residents will be moving into their new properties in the coming weeks.

These new homes use energy efficient technology such as air-sourced heat pumps and boast improved levels of insulation to reduce fuel bills. They also deliver on our ambition to become a carbon neutral Council by 2030. In addition, all areas of the buildings have sprinklers as well as incorporating other design features to focus on fire safety measures.

Cllr Sof McVeigh, Lead Member for Housing said: “I was extremely proud to visit Hewer Street which is a beautifully constructed development. It’s fantastic news that key workers have already been allocated these properties which are now ready for them to move into.

“Credit goes to my predecessor Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith for launching this New Homes Programme which is delivering a mixture of social rent, key worker and market rent homes across the borough. I am determined to build on this work and look forward to opening the first new social rent homes in the programme at Kelso Cochrane House later this year.”
