An advisory cycle lane will be introduced on Kensington High Street this summer after a consultation found 66 per cent of people supported or partly supported the proposal.
What will the cycle lane be like on Kensington High Street?
The cycle lane will be a painted dashed ‘with traffic flow’ white lines without any physical infrastructure.
It will be two metres wide and run between Earls Court Road and Addison Road/Warwick Gardens and between Palace Avenue and Queen’s Gate.
Existing parking and loading provision in Kensington High Street will be maintained and will not be affected by the scheme.
When will the cycle lane come into action?
Work is due to begin on Tuesday 15 August 2023 and is expected to take around three nights, weather permitting. FM Conway, the Council’s contractor, will be completing the works, which will happen between 9pm and 6am to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.
Will the road be open during the works?
Kensington High Street will be open for the duration of the works. Minor traffic restrictions will be in place and there may be some traffic disruption for a short period. There will be minimum disruption to pedestrian movement across the carriageway at crossing points.
Please check for local parking restrictions as some parking bays may be temporarily suspended in order to allow the works to take place.
What did the consultation say?
We had 1,775 responses to the consultation, which ran from 15 May 2023 to 26 June 2023. Around 66 per cent of respondents to the consultation supported the measures in full or part for Kensington High Street.
A road safety audit suggested extending the width of the cycle lanes to two metres, wherever this is possible.
A report has been published on the Council’s website which includes details of the consultation responses, analysed by officers.
During the consultation we also consulted on an advisory cycle lane on Fulham Road. The decision to introduce this has also been confirmed. Works have not yet been scheduled for the scheme on Fulham Road.
