Helping young people navigate their mental health

Published: Thursday 4 May 2023

A new campaign launched by Kensington and Chelsea Council alongside partners Westminster City Council, Young K&C and Young Westminster is set to start a conversation with young people about taking control of their mental health and finding the best support available to them.

The “We got U, U got this” campaign will see a range of eye-catching material circulated in schools, youth clubs, libraries, sports clubs and in other youth-frequented spaces to let them know that they are not alone when it comes to feelings of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.

Cllr Catherine Faulks, Lead Member for Family and Children’s Services at Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: “Given the disruption caused by the pandemic and the rising cost of living being a young person is really tough at the moment. It should be a carefree time of life. That’s why we’ve worked with our partners to boost awareness of what’s available to young people should they feel like they need any support to healthily process their feelings or emotions.”

Young people will also see a range of videos that break down myths and jargon around mental health, produced by a documentary student from the borough. Video topics include mental health myth-busting, breaking down common terminology and exploring the mental health of young men.

Young K&C Video Officer, Tabatha Batra Vaughan, said: “I’ve loved working on this video series – visiting local youth clubs; meeting new people; and learning more about the importance of mental health. I’ve been working with a team of local young people who have been so helpful and insightful. It’s great to be working in the community I grew up in and I hope these videos will encourage more young people to discuss their mental health.”

This content will be made available online and through social media, being both promoted organically and through targeted ads at the campaign’s target audience, as well as being shared for displaying on digital screens in schools, libraries, leisure centres, and youth clubs across the two boroughs.
