Fulham Road will get a new cycle lane, with work due to be complete this November. The designs are painted, dashed “with traffic flow” white lines without any physical infrastructure. Work is due to begin by the Council’s contractor on Monday 6 November and will take around 10 nights. Work will take place between 9pm and 6am to minimise disruption.
The cycle improvements follow works to improve safety at the junction of Beaufort Street, Drayton Gardens and Fulham Road, with new pedestrian crossings and advanced stop lines for cyclists on all four arms. The works on the junction are also due to be completed by mid-November.
Cllr Cem Kemahli, lead member planning and public realm, said:
“This new painted cycle lane allows space for everyone who uses our roads as we aim to become a greener, safer and fairer borough.
“We’ve had a good introduction on Kensington High Street with a similar scheme, where there has been very little impact on traffic.
“As with any works, there may be some minor disruption while we get the paint on the ground, but the design has been created to strike the right balance between making room for cyclists and keeping Fulham Road moving.”
Will the road have to close?
No, the road will not have to close and Fulham Road will remain open for the duration of the works. Minor traffic restrictions will be in place while the works are completed. Some parking bays might be temporarily suspended during the works, so check locally for any signposted parking restrictions.
Did the Council consult?
The measures are being implemented after a consultation into the proposals found that 71 per cent of people who responded support or partially support the measures in Fulham Road. A similar scheme was introduced on Kensington High Street in August this year.
