On Monday 7 October, the Council launched the Employment and Skills strand of its Economy Strategy, 'Live, Work, and Learn: Our plan for a successful local economy'.
Held at Kensington and Chelsea College on Wornington Road, the event gathered together local organisations with an interest in supporting local employment and skills including youth clubs, voluntary and community organisations, service providers, resident associations, charities, and museums.
Councillor Catherine Faulks spoke about the objectives and actions in the Economy Strategy to target improving employment opportunities, employability, and personal, vocational and professional skills. She was joined by Kensington and Chelsea College's Principal, Andy Cole, Dee Solanki, Partnership Manager at Department for Work and Pensions and Angela Spence from Kensington and Chelsea Social Council. All highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to ensuring those living and working in the borough can reach their full potential.
To support the delivery of the objectives outlined in the strategy, organisations at the event made pledges of support such as offering work experience positions, commissioning additional skills support for young adults with Special Educational Needs, and supporting applicants to find relevant opportunities.
The Council welcomed two guests of honour who showed how it is leading by example; sisters Rawan and Jayan Hameh. Having moved to the UK from Syria, Rawan and Jayan are two of RBKC’s newest Business Support Apprentices and also reside in the borough, looking to build their skills and a career with the Council.
A second launch event will take place on Monday 4 November and will address the Business and Enterprise strand of the Economy Strategy, with more pledges to come.
