Kensington and Chelsea Council is one of 25 councils to commit to ensuring vital building safety work continues during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Building Safety Pledge sets out the councils’ commitment to improving the safety of residential blocks while ensuring those working on site are given clear information and support to guarantee their own safety and limit the spread of COVID-19.
Kensington and Chelsea has paused a proportion of its capital build programmes during the pandemic, but work in essential building and maintenance, including its fire door replacement programme, has continued.
Cllr Kim Taylor-Smith, Deputy Leader and Lead member for Grenfell, Housing and Property, Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:
“Grenfell was a terrible tragedy and it is inherent upon Kensington and Chelsea to strive to achieve best practice in building safety. It is what our residents expect and deserve and that is why we had no hesitation in agreeing to this pledge.
“The pandemic presents significant challenges for us all but the health and safety of our residents remains our number one priority. We know it is an unsettling time and all our staff are working hard to make sure they can continue to keep buildings safe while following public health guidance on handwashing, social distancing and using PPE.”
