Back and bursting with colour

Notting Hill Carnival will return to the streets of Kensington and Chelsea for the first time in two years, in a thrilling display of music, dance, food and celebrations, held over the August bank holiday weekend.

Announced earlier today, Notting Hill Carnival will take place Sunday 28 August and Monday 29 August 2022 in a parade expected to be bigger and better than ever before.

Kensington and Chelsea Council supports the Notting Hill Carnival organisers to host an enjoyable and safe event, working well in advance with local residents, businesses and visitors to the borough. A residents’ phoneline and booklets door-dropped in advance will be full of information on routes, heatwave information, road and parking plans, as well as advice for businesses on trading rules, licensing and waste collection services.

Notting Hill Carnival is one of Europe’s biggest street festival and following the weekend’s celebrations, street cleaning will be top of the Council’s priorities, ensuring the local area returns to normal as quickly as possible.

Lead Member for Culture, Leisure and Community Safety, Cllr Emma Will said:

Notting Hill Carnival is an institution of the borough, celebrating Caribbean culture and its immense influence on London and Britain as a whole.

One of the biggest festivals in the world, Carnival returning to an in-person event is something for us all to celebrate as we get back to normal. As we head into a busy and hot summer, we ask all those attending to be considerate of our residents and other visitors to the borough, so the bank holiday weekend can be enjoyable for all.

As we welcome visitors back to the borough for their first Carnival on the streets since 2019, we encourage everyone to be considerate of their fellow attendees and those who live or work nearby,  Key to the Council’s messaging this Carnival, is to remind attendees excited to visit the weekend’s activities, for their first time following the Covid-19 pandemic, to be considerate of their fellow attendees and those who live or work nearby. #ConsiderateCarnival will be used on social media to remind people to be thoughtful.

Following an exceptional collaboration earlier this summer with Glastonbury Festival, the stage is set for an exhilarating weekend and this this year will be the greenest year for Carnival with the addition of an electric moving sound system, which could become the first of many, as Carnival moves in a more eco-friendly direction that will also remove the obligations from artists and performers for paying for their floats and transport.

Tessa Williams, who has lived in the Notting Hill area for her entire life and first attended Carnival at the age of six, said:

My mum and dad would dress me and my sisters in nice clothes and comb our hair, then we would go out on the streets which were filled with crowds of people dancing, singing, eating, laughing – just all really having a great time.

It’s exciting to know that we will be able to celebrate Carnival together once again. It was sad it was off the streets for two years as Carnival is very important to our community and our culture and we look forward to sharing it once again with friends, family and the community.
