Our major works team have once again been busy out and about making much-needed improvements to the homes of our residents.
This time our team have been up at the iconic Trellick Tower working on the £0.5 million flat entrance doors replacement programme. Replacing these doors is a legal requirement, that we, as landlords have to carry out to meet current fire and building safety regulations.
As many of our residents know, Trellick Tower is a Grade II* listed building and if any work needs to be carried out we must consult with not only the residents but Historic England and our in-house heritage team. This ensures that whatever work we need to do is done sensitively and without causing any harm to the fabric of the building.
Gerard McAtamney, co-chairman of the Trellick Tower Residents Association (TA) told us:
As the co-chair of the Trellick Tower Tenants Association, I have been involved in the project from its inception. I represent a group who are very passionate about the building’s design and architecture and who see themselves as custodians.
It was clear from the start that residents and the project team alike wanted to honour the original Erno Goldfinger design as closely as possible. With the help of the super-resourceful TA, we were able to recreate the original design using innovative 3D printing methods. We were also able to pick the brains of an architect who worked alongside Goldfinger to get their thoughts on door colours.
This whole process emphasises just how passionate our residents are about preserving Trellick Tower and honouring Goldfinger’s original brutalist architecture.
Once the residents were happy with the design, orders were placed, and the manufacturing began! The first doors were installed in February and we anticipate all to be installed by the end of May.
Examples of the doors before and after the work can be seen below:
Our team have really enjoyed working on this project and collaborating with residents at Trellick Tower and has certainly learned a lot about Goldfinger in the process!
We asked the Tenants Association if they had any thoughts on the project and they told us:
The consultation was meaningful, and the team engaged our group respectfully, listening to our views and implementing the changes we requested resulting in a faithful reproduction of the original listed design.
In the decade that I’ve lived at Trellick Tower, and represented residents, this is the most collaborative partnership I’ve been involved in. We would be delighted to see this level of mutual respect and collaboration replicated in future projects. Congratulations to Nitin and his team for leading such a meaningful project.
