Testing your smoke alarm is a legal requirement

Published: Wednesday 6 July 2022

In Autumn this year a new law will be coming into place which states that all rented properties are to be fitted with working smoke alarms on each level of the property.

We are therefore asking all of our residents to test their smoke alarms, including council tenants, leaseholders, and non-resident leaseholders. If the latter applies to you, and you rent out your property, you are required by law to provide alarms for the protection of your tenants.

All smoke alarms come equipped with a ‘test’ button which will enable anyone to safely check the alarm is working. Simply press the button and hold until you hear the alarm sounding.

If any residents find that their smoke alarm is not working, they don’t have one at all, or they require assistance with testing their alarm, then please get in touch with our Fire Safety Team as soon as possible by emailing [email protected].
