Stay safe this summer

Published: Tuesday 2 August 2022

We've launched a Stay Safe This Summer campaign which focuses on staying safe outdoors this summer for all our residents.

Over the next four weeks, you’ll see a variety of important safety messages rolled out across our channels to help our residents make the most of this summer safely and responsibly.

Keep an eye on our Instagram account, @housingmattersrbkc, to see the Major Works Team out and about making important improvements to your homes, and our Fire Safety Team who will be dropping into an event near you.

Major Works

As our major works programme continues, it is likely that at some point you'll be living in or around an active construction site.

These environments come with certain risks and we want to make sure that all our residents are kept safe by following our top tips:
•    Do not climb or venture out onto scaffolding.
•    Be our eyes and ears and speak to a member of the site team if you have any safety concerns.
•    Do not walk into prohibited site areas.
•    Follow all safety signage.
•    Clear your personal items from working areas.
•    Always ask operatives to show IDs before letting them into your home.
•    Do not dispose of any rubbish onto scaffold or other structures, especially not cigarette butts or anything else that might be a fire hazard.

Fire prevention

We know that during the summer months everyone wants to make the most of the weather and get outdoors but there are a few things we want to ensure all our residents are aware of to keep everyone safe:
•    You should never use a barbeque, including disposable barbeques on a balcony.
•    Barbeques are a fire hazard and it is dangerous to have a barbeque so close to a building. They can stay hot for hours and smouldering debris can spit off the barbeque and float down to other levels.
•    It’s important to keep your balcony free from flammable and dangerous items, excess furniture, and clutter.
•    Corridors should also be free of clutter so as not to block escape routes or hinder the work of the Fire Brigade in an emergency.
•    Do not throw lit cigarettes or butts from your balcony. If you do smoke on your balcony, make sure you put out your cigarettes completely and dispose of them properly and carefully.
