Old Housing department furniture re-purposed, recycled

You may recall back in late summer last year, Council Housing Management staff based at the Network Hub in Kensal Road relocated to refurbished offices at Malton Road in W10 and Pembroke Road in Earl's Court. In the months that followed, the Council's Social Investment and Property team worked with Reyooz, a technology platform that provides 'sustainability' as a service, in order to re-purpose items of office furniture that were not required in the new office spaces. We are pleased to report that Reyooz eventually found new homes for over 350 desks, chairs, tables and cabinets.

The equipment is now being put to good use by a range of organisations and individuals including the Gladesmore Community School in Tottenham and the Jigsaw Trust, a charity that aims to provide ongoing education, vocational and wellbeing services for autistic individuals and support for their families.

In the final breakdown of the items Reyooz cleared from the old Hub, 92 per cent were re-used and the remaining 8 per cent recycled. The recycled materials weighed a total of 548 kilograms and contained just over a tonne of embedded carbon - the same amount as would be created by driving a car non-stop for 438 hours!

Reducing waste and contributing to a circular economy is just one way that we’re becoming a greener borough, as we aim to make our Council operations net zero by 2030.
