Following the cleaning and caretaking services coming back under Council control at the end of its contract with OCS last year, the new Estate Care service is bedding in.
Ward teams, each comprised of Patch Caretakers, a Senior Caretaker, and an Estate Manager, serve eight defined areas, with a mobile team available to carry out bulk waste removal, scheduled deep cleans, window cleaning, jet-washing, and graffiti removal, across the borough.
This new way of working enables Estate Care to respond to the needs of residents in a more flexible way and includes acting on requests for ad hoc services such as attention to overlooked areas, spillages, and seasonal cleaning.
Through this restructure the Council has been able to create modest savings that are being used to fund an evening caretaking service which will extend our capability to deal with out-of-hours jobs and urgent visits. When not responding to incidents, this team will visit sites across the borough helping to spot disrepair, deter antisocial behaviour and loitering, and assist in the event of emergencies.
Many of OCS’ cleaning staff have joined the Council with the majority being employed into their first choice of new role within the Estate Care structure and some of our most experienced and dedicated staff getting well-deserved promotions.
Residents will soon be invited to meet their dedicated team at a series of local community events being planned for the coming months. This will offer an opportunity for residents to feedback on the new cleaning and caretaking provision, ask questions, and make suggestions for how the service could be improved further.
Dennis Paul, Head of Estates & Environmental Services, said:
“Estate Care has been in operation for several weeks now, so we look forward to meeting residents in person and hearing their feedback. We want to be sure the changes we have made are meeting residents’ needs and delivering the service that they want. Their feedback will help us fine-tune any areas where it is needed.”
