Food waste collection comes to World’s End

Kensington and Chelsea is on a journey to become a cleaner, greener borough, setting ourselves two ambitious targets:

  • To become a net zero carbon Council by 2030 from our operations and buildings
  • To become a carbon neutral borough by 2040

It's important we all work together to achieve these targets and do our bit to reduce the impact our daily lives and activities have on the environment.  Crucially, we all must reduce the quantity of waste we generate, and dispose of our unavoidable waste responsibly.

With this in mind, Housing Management has been working with the Council’s Waste Action Team to expand the borough’s new food waste recycling collection service to World’s End Estate, to make it easier for resident's to help in the fight against climate change.

Colleagues have been knocking on doors throughout the past few weeks to speak to residents about the new service and deliver to each household:

  • A new small kitchen food waste caddy
  • 12 months’ supply of special liners for the caddy
  • Detailed service information leaflet

Communal food waste bins have been installed across the estate for residents to dispose of their waste when their kitchen caddy is full. These metal, lockable, food housing units have been specifically designed to keep smells contained and vermin out; whilst storing food waste between each weekly collection.

Although a voluntary service, there are great reasons for residents to support this initiative, including:

  • The food waste that is collected is transported to an anaerobic digestion plant, where it is used to generate power, and then used as a compost to grow crops. Just one caddy-load of food waste generates enough electricity to power a light bulb for 24 hours!
  • 30 per cent of your general waste is food waste. Recycling food will enable you to take the smelly content out of your general waste bin and also help reduce the amount of general waste we collect.

A wide range of cooked and uncooked food waste including plate scrapings, cooked and raw fruit and vegetables, tea bags, coffee grounds and meat and fish bones can be disposed of via this collection service.

Residents can use their new service by following the three steps below:

Not a resident of World’s End? Hold on tight! We are working our way to you. We are currently waiting for a new food waste collection vehicle which can sufficiently support the continued expansion of this initiative.
