Nutrition training on offer for organisations

Malnutrition Awareness Training is for anyone working with older people. Participants are introduced to the problem of malnutrition in older people in the UK and are given practical knowledge of how to screen older people for malnutrition and support those they care for to eat well.

Nutrition training for Early Years settings

Any early years settings in the borough who are signed up to doing the Healthy Eating Awards can receive free training from the public health nutrition team in Healthy Eating for 1- 5s, fussy eating, developing a food policy and menu planning. For more information contact [email protected]

Local healthy eating campaigns and programmes to promote healthy eating in the borough.

There are a number of campaigns and programmes locally to support healthy eating including:

The Baby Friendly Initiative in Kensington and Chelsea

The Baby Friendly Initiative is a global programme of UNICEF and the World Health Organisation which works with health Unicefservices to improve practice, so that parents are enabled and supported to make informed choices about how they feed and care for their babies.

Central London Community Healthcare is working towards receiving the prestigious UNICEF/WHO Baby Friendly Award.

Promotion of Healthy Start for low income families

Healthy Start Healthy Startis a national programme which provides free fruit, vegetables, milk, formula and vitamins for low income families with children under 4. Local health professionals should promote the scheme to those who may be eligible. If you work with pregnant women or mothers of children under five, more information is available on the Healthy Start website.

Promotion of vitamins for pregnant women and children under five

The CLCH public health nutrition team, local health professionals and early years settings working with children and pregnant women are promoting vitamins for pregnant women and children under five. Whilst a healthy balanced diet is important there are times when you need certain vitamins as a supplement. A particular concern at the moment is vitamin D. Local doctors are seeing more children with rickets. Rickets softens bones in children and can lead to fractures and deformity.  Pregnant women should take folic acid and vitamins C and D. Children under 5 should take vitamins A,C and D.

Where do families get vitamins?

If they qualify for the Healthy Start scheme, they can get them for FREE with vitamin coupons at children’s centres and health centres in RBKC.

If they do not qualify for the Healthy Start scheme, they can still buy the Healthy Start vitamins for a small amount at RBKC children’s centres and health centres.

The Healthy Eating Awards for early years settings Healthy Eating

The Healthy Eating Awards is a free awards scheme for early years’ settings and childminders in Kensington and Chelsea which can help you prevent obesity and poor oral health and promote healthy eating with the support of nutritionists from the CLCH public health nutrition team. Healthy Eating in Schools

CLCH public health nutrition team works in the Royal Borough's primary schools to improve food provision, environment and learning about healthy eating.

Some of the support offered includes help with producing a Whole School Food Policy, packed lunch initiatives, Water in Schools campaigns, helping ensure adherence to standards for food provision at breakfast, lunch and after school, healthy eating in the curriculum and improving nutrition and cooking skills.

Kids in the Kitchen

Kids in the Kitchen is delivered by the CLCH public health nutrition team. The 5 week programme involves both children aCook and Taste kids in the kitchenged 8-12 and their parents and supports the whole family to improve their diet and learn practical cooking skills. Cook and Taste programmes and Healthy Cooking Programmes

Cook and Taste is a community based nutrition and cookery programme delivered by the CLCH public health nutrition team.

Each Cook and Taste programme includes healthy eating information and will help people to learn how to cook nutritious, tasty and affordable food.

  •  Cook and Taste healthy eating programme: 6 weekly 2 hour sessions with general healthy eating advice.
  •  Cook and Taste diabetes programme: 7 weekly 2 hour sessions with practical dietary advice to improve blood glucose control.
  •  Cook and Taste weight management programme: 7 weekly 2 hour sessions with weight loss advice and weigh-in’s to help you achieve a healthy body shape.

Improving access to healthy food

Kensington and Chelsea Access to Food (KCAF) Project The CLCH public health nutrition team is working with voluntary and statutory partners to identify and understand local food access issues affecting low-income households in Kensington and Chelsea.

The project is in the stages of planning and development and will use food mapping tools to identify access to ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ food outlets in a deprived catchment area of Kensington and Chelsea.

The project team will also speak to local community and food retailers to understand perceptions, barriers and food shopping habits.

Healthier Catering Commitment for London Project

The CLCH public health nutrition team is working in partnership with Environmental Health to support food businesses to serve healthier food. The project is based on a ‘small changes big different principle’ encouraging businesses to offer healthier options, smaller portions and adopt healthier cooking and preparation practices.

Lunch Clubs and Day Centres for older people

Age UK Food and Friends

Weight management

The ‘Fit for Life’ Programme is a free ten week group programme which focuses on a different topic related to weight management each week. The groups are run by a registered dietician and a qualified exercise instructor, and are focused on developing key lifestyle skills to manage your weight successfully. The programme also provides an opportunity to meet other like-minded people with similar goals. We also hold dietetic led one-to-one clinic consultations. The Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS) also supports people in Kensington and Chelsea to lose weight and improve their health. It consists of a highly specialised multi-disciplinary team, including a dietician, physiotherapist, psychologist and medical consultant.

We hold individual one-to-one clinic sessions in both the North and South of the borough to make it convenient for clients, we also hold groups sessions, and weekly physiotherapist led exercise classes. Clients who are unable to get to locations due to poor mobility, the service offers homes visits.

Seeing a dietician

The nutrition and dietetic team at Central London Community Healthcare work with people who are in need of assessment, advice and treatment on nutrition and weight. The nutrition and dietetics team includes chronic disease management, nutrition support, paediatric, specialist weight management, diabetes and public health nutrition teams and work with adults and children who require support to manage and prevent a range of conditions.

People can be referred to a dietician by their GP, hospital consultant or other healthcare professional. People can refer themselves to our Cook and Taste programmes on 020 7313 3060 and weight management programme Fit For Life on 020 7313 3061
