Black History Month at Libraries and Archives

This event is part of a special programme of events and book displays, delivered by Libraries and Archives, to celebrate Black History Month throughout October 2022. The theme is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’. Join us as part of the nationwide celebration of Black History, Arts and Culture in the UK.

This is the second in a two part presentation focusing on the creation and history of Afrofuturism. Presenting this often overlooked genre will be, Ayesha Nembhard from Kensington and Chelsea Libraries with guest speakers, Isis and Junior Tomlin.

Junior Tomlin was born and raised in Ladbroke Grove and he excelled in art from an early age. Renowned for his stunning images, his visionary work combines influences from sci-fi, surrealism, fantasy and futurism. He also worked on numerous comic titles, as a colourist, including Judge Dredd, Transformers Armada and The Teenage Ninja Turtles and worked for Marvel, Panini, Titan and 2000AD. He was also one of the co-founders of The London Cartoon Centre aka "The Cartoon Workshop", which was a seminal place for 18-25 year olds to learn how to create sequential art. In recent years he has explored themes around Afrofuturism, taking inspiration from African iconography, design, fashion and culture which has lead him to creating astounding images of African and Caribbean people in futuristic scenarios.
