Black History Month at Libraries and Archives
This event is part of a special programme of events and book displays, delivered by Libraries and Archives, to celebrate Black History Month throughout October 2022. The theme is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’. Join us as part of the nationwide celebration of Black History, Arts and Culture in the UK.
"I came up with the Black Panther because I realised I had no Black(people) in my strip....I suddenly discovered that I had a lot of Black readers. And here was I ignoring them because I was associating with everyone else". Jack Kirby, The Comics Journal, 1990
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, this is the first in a two- part presentation focusing on the history of the Black superhero. How they were created and how they impacted on the stereotypical perceptions of Black people in the media. Presenting this fascinating subject will be, Ayesha Nembhard and Jackie Hastick from Kensington and Chelsea Libraries with guest speaker, I Sis.
I Sis is a local social historian, a presenter on Portobello Radio, a DJ and a proud superhero and sci-fi aficionado. She is also a huge fan of the Afrofuturism genre. Along with fellow geeks, JC Kamau and Junior Tomlin, who will be our guest presenter in part 2, I Sis is a member of the AfricentriXs collective.
