Review and Assessment of Air Quality

Under the Environment Act 1995, the Royal Borough is required by the Government to review and assess air quality and to work towards meeting national air quality objectives. These are set out in the National Air Quality Strategy and the latest was published in July 2007. This strategy sets out revised air quality standards and objectives including a new policy framework for tackling fine particles. It also includes policy options to improve air quality. Although air quality in the Royal Borough has generally been improving, levels of two pollutants, fine particles (PM₁₀) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) remain above the national objectives in a number of locations and are not predicted to fall below these levels by 2011. The whole of the Royal Borough was therefore declared as an Air Quality Management Area in 2000 for these two pollutants. This resulted in the production of the Air Quality Action Plan, which identified targets to help improve local air quality.
