General Information on Learning Mentors

Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC)

The Children's Workforce Development Council was established in 2005 and have been responsible for developing and implementing professional standards for the children and young people’s workforce. You will find information about Learning Mentors under Areas of Work, Young People’s Work Force.

Charities offering training, advice and resources

• Barnardos - Barnardos Charity has resources for those working with young people; useful advice for young carers. Help line. 
• Brief - Training and publications in Solution Focus approach and thinking. 
• Bullying UK - Bullying UK comes under the umbrella of Family Lives and has useful resources for schools and anti-bully strategies.
• Caspari - Caspari Foundation based in London, offer a range of benefits to members, including access to information and resources, training and networking opportunities. 
• CCHF - all about kids - Charity which began in 1884, now gives disadvantaged children aged 7 to 11, residential activity and respite break. 
• Child Line - Offers advice on a wide range of issues, abuse and safety, running away, anti-bullying, social networking, crime and the law. 
• NSPCC - NSPCC charity also offers advice and has a range of resources and activities for working with young people. Help Line.
• Samaritans - Fact sheets, resources for young people's emotional health, includes youth pack, dealing with suicide. Help line.
• Young Minds - National charity dedicated to improving mental health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people. Offers training, advice and a help line. 
• Winston’s Wish - Winston’s Wish offers practical support and guidance to families, professionals and anyone concerned about a grieving child. 
• Young People in Focus YPF - UK charity, formerly known as Trust for the Study of Adolescence (TSA), that helps individuals and organisations working with young people and families (aged 10-25) through research, training and publications.

• Brighton and Hove - The local learning mentors have produced a learning mentor case study booklet illustrating the work and impact LMs can have in both primary and secondary schools.

The documents on this site have been compiled by Hazel Abbott, Learning Mentor consultant from 2000 to 2011. We also acknowledge the work of Learning Mentors in Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea who have developed this unique and complex role over the last decade and have provided valuable support for children and young people in overcoming barriers to learning.
