The Exhibition Road Project
The Exhibition Road project was completed on 8 December 2011, changing a confusing and unwelcoming road into a word class streetscape and stunning public space that can be enjoyed by visitors and residents.
Access
In order to make Exhibition Road as safe and accessible as possible for all road users, extensive research went into the new street design.
As well as extensive modelling, we studied and took inspiration from similar urban design schemes from around the world. The Council had an active involvement in the following research projects:
- safety report on current conditions of Exhibition Road carried out by independent access consultant, David Bonnett Associates
- ongoing consultations with pedestrian, cycling and disability groups
- academic research, conducted by the University College London PAMELA test facility, into the delineation of space in single surface streetscape schemes
- Shared Space Corduroy Hazard Warning delineator: Testing in a Street Environment. Carried out December 2010 and February 2011
Monitoring
We continued to monitor pedestrian and vehicle use of the road after completion of the construction works in December 2011 and subsequent changes were made to the original scheme, such as installing a new raised island at the junction of Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road to stop drivers making illegal turns.
