Girls in Kensington and Chelsea can emulate the exploits of the Lionesses by joining a new football league kicking off this September.

Five teams have signed up so far to compete in the competition, which is open to girls of school age and will take place at the Westway Sports & Fitness Centre.

The league is being funded by Kensington and Chelsea Council, which is working with local groups to encourage more teams to sign up. The Council is also backing a boys’ league which currently features 23 teams and more than 160 players. The final was celebrated last Friday when Kensington Impact FC, DSS FC and Henry Dickens won their respective age groups. They received their trophies from the Mayor, Cllr Will Lane at Westway.

Welcoming the announcement Cllr Emma Will, Lead Member for Leisure, said:

“We’ve all been enjoying the exciting summer of sport and the Euros have been inspiring. We’re all hoping England can go all the way. It’s wonderful news to be able to announce that we’re supporting a new girl’s football league, as well as ensuring the successful boys league begun this season can continue for another season.

“We know how much boys and girls enjoy football and I would encourage parents and carers to support their children if they want to take part.”

Talking of the success of this year’s boys league, Ali Sharif of London Capital FC said:

“I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding organization and execution of the football league. As a club director, I have been thoroughly impressed with the seamless coordination, fair competition, and overall professionalism demonstrated throughout the season.”
