Loretta Campbell Identity - 'A Sense Of Place'

Loretta wanted to use materials and create a new story through a dress. Life is full of layers. The layers of fabric in the wedding dress signify a time in one’s life. Looking at the bottom of the princess’ dress Loretta felt it related to the idea of slavery and being bound at the feet with chains. The silhouettes of the masks trapped in plastic and cords that hold the materials together as a substitute to chains.

Loretta has always questioned her identity and struggled with dyslexia. Her method of work helps her to remember things by storing it in different ways in her mind. The work has helped Loretta to express herself when she feels trapped.

Working with recycled material and plastic is a way of keeping memories trapped in the layers. She enjoys showing it through her work of mixed media, prints and etching. Her later works such as digital, photo and screen print, etching and mix media techniques are used to express her poetry.
